OPEC: BP To Win “Gusher of the Year” Prize

(FiniteTimes.com) – While British Petroleum has been getting nothing but bad press lately over it’s oil well problems in the Gulf of Mexico, an announcement on Thursday by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) may put a little silver in the lining of what has been a bad month. According to OPEC, BP is the winner of this year’s Gusher of the Year Flow Award (or Floward, as it has come to be called). And in a bit of irony, they win this recognition with the same well that is currently filling the Gulf with oil and their boardroom with headaches.

“It’s a huge award, and one they would normally take great pride in receiving and trumpeting,” says Tim Winslow, a writer for industry watcher Wildcat Weekly. “It’s got to be a bit of a conundrum for them though: do you show up in Dubai and accept the award and the accolades of your peers? Or do you refuse it on the grounds that to acknowledge it means you’ve been steadfastly lying — and I mean hugely fucking lying — about the amount of oil coming out of that well?

“It’s a tough decision, and I’m not sure I’d like to be in their shoes. Well, obviously, but not in their shoes AGAIN, I guess.”

While this is only the third time a non-OPEC member has won the Gusher of the Year Floward, it is the first time that a currently evolving environmental disaster has ever won.
