Gonzales Mulls Senate Strategy
Washington, DC (FiniteTimes.com) – Due to the Virginia Tech shooting tragedy, Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez has been granted an additional two days to prepare for his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. It is time, experts believe, that he may be using to consider an unconventional testimonial strategy.
“It’s sort of de facto that officials trooping up to Capitol Hill to testify are going to elect to go the ‘truth’ route,” says Yale associate professor of legislative studies Hugh Miller. “Wouldn’t it be novel if Gonzalez decided to turn the tables and go ‘dare’?”
Miller points to the growing body of e-mails and other documentation that seem to contradict many statements that AG Gonzalez has made concerning the US Attorney controversy currently swirling around his department. At some point, Miller says, the dare option may be the only one left available to the nation’s top cop.
“Perjuring yourself before the Senate Judiciary Committee or standing on Pennsylvania Avenue in your Sponge Bob boxers belting out show tunes,” Miller says. “I know which one I’d choose.”
This strategy may not sit so well in the Senate though, which has had a long tradition of favoring truth when it comes to dealings with the minority party. The committee’s Democratic chairman, Patrick Leahy, seems particularly ill-disposed to let Gonzalez off with a simple dare.
“Can I dare him to tell the frigging truth? Is that allowed?” Leahy asked when confronted with the possibility of a Gonzalez dare. “I don’t know, but I’ll get the Senate historians right on it.”
